The Supreme Personality of Godhead is the lord of bewilderment. He always bewilders the jīva through his transcendental activities. We cannot reckon his potencies and pervasiveness with our mental speculation.
We all know about Earth, Moon, Sun, the other planets, stars, asteroids, spaceships. We know Delhi, Kolkata, New York, Bangladesh, Switzerland and so many places. All of us are engaged in certain kind of professions and hold certain titles. We wake up, work, sleep and again wake up. This cycle doesn’t end. That is why, our world is limited to these things only. Similarly, our knowledge is limited because the people around us have the same amount of knowledge. That’s how our intelligence is covered with Avidya. We fail to see beyond.
So, can’t we know about the Lord? Yes. How? It all starts with a pinch of faith and shelter under the pure devotees and sastras.
But, why are we going to talk about Brahma? He is already a devotee! True. That is why, today, we are going to explore Lord’s greatness through the lens of Brahma, the first living entity of our universe.
Do we really need this? Yes, indeed, we do. Don’t you want to know your constitutional position and relationship with Him? Let’s begin!
There are certain past times of the Lord, where he bewilders Brahma by showing His greatness. In this article, we will explore one of them. Srimad Bhagavatam’s, 10th Canto, chapter 13 ‘The Stealing of the Boys and calves by Brahma’ deals with The Brahma Vimohana Lila. This chapter describes Lord Brahma’s attempt to take away the calves and cowherd boys and it also describes the bewilderment of Lord Brahma and finally the clearance of his illusion.
Just to examine the potency of Kṛṣṇa, Lord Brahmā took away all the calves and cowherd boys and kept them in a secluded place.
When Kṛṣṇa was unable to find the calves and boys, He could understand that this was a trick performed by Brahmā.
Brahma wanted to mystify the one, who mystifies the entire universe. The all pervading Lord made Brahma to be mystified by his own mystic power.
What did Brahma see?
When one full year had passed, Brahmā returned and saw that Kṛṣṇa was still engaged as usual with His friends and the calves and cows. Then, Kṛṣṇa exhibited all the calves and cowherd boys as four-armed forms of Nārāyaṇa. Those Visnu Murtis were having divine smiles, so bright and blissful, crushing the ignorance within heart. Several living entities, both animate and inanimate, along with infinite Brahmas took their forms and were worshipping the Lord. He was surrounded by all kinds of material and mystic opulence.
What is the lesson for us?
Sometimes, we lose faith and try to reject Lord’s arrangement. There, we try to do things whimsically. But, unknowingly, we become implicated in Kṛṣṇa’s Maya. We should rather accept his arrangements. Only, this can make us happy.
When one acquires a little bit of scientific knowledge, he immediately begins to defy the authority of the Lord. But, we can see, someone like Brahma, who is the most knowledgeable and learned one in the entire universe got bewildered and astonished. What to speak of those little philosophers and scientists?
So, should we believe in scientists? Yes, only if they are free from ITCC (the 4 defects) :
• Imperfect senses
• The propensity for cheating
• Certainty of committing mistakes
• Certainty of being illusioned.
How to know if they are free from 4 defects? Well, it is a descriptive subject matter. Still, let’s keep it shorter. We know that scientists are normal human beings. Now, ask yourself a few questions :
1. Do your senses (eyes, ears, tongue, nose and skin) give right knowledge about objects all the time?
2. Have you never told a lie?
3. Have you never committed any single mistake?
4. Have you never been illusioned?
However, there will be not much difference between the answers of yours and theirs.
Yes, we do have these defects. Similarly, whatever knowledge we create or propose is full of defects.
Now, whom to believe? Who is free from all these defects? That is Shastra. Why?
Well, the answer is simple – because it is Apaurusheya. It is not created by any human like you and me. It is Anadi, Ananta and non-different from the Lord Himself.
Now, one may say, “I have read all the Shastras, those are outdated and impractical.” Let’s take an example. If you try to blow more air into a small balloon, what will happen? Obviously, it will blast. The human brain’s capacity is like that only. Its intake capacity is as insignificant as dust when compared to Brahma.
Only pure devotion unto Lord’s lotus feet will help you to understand the Lord. Why? Let’s take another example. The beloved is actually known through his or her lover.
Similarly, the pure devotees of the Lord are His closest associates, because of their unconditional love for Him. If we read Srimad Bhagavatam, we find how Lord reciprocated and exposed himself to pure devotees like Prahlad Maharaj, Queen Kunti, Dhruv Maharaj, Mother Yashoda and Nanda Maharaj, the Gopis, Bhishma Dev, Arjuna, etc and had wonderful past times.
“How to develop love for Him?” Well, I already said in the beginning :
It all starts with a pinch of faith and shelter under the pure devotees and sastras.
