5 Simple Steps to Join Lord Chaitanya’s Mission

How to be part of Lord Chaitanya's movement? Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's sankirtan movement gives everyone an opportunity to revive their relationship with Krishna and experience the joy of devotional service. Here are five practical steps to understand this mission, take part in it and help it grow.

In our previous article, The Ongoing Divine Pastimes of the Lord, we discussed how the Lord's divine pastimes continue even today. We also explored how fortunate we are to take part in these pastimes through devotional service.

Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu appeared to spread the chanting of Krishna's holy names. His mission is open to everyone, regardless of nationality, social position, education or background. Anyone can take part by sincerely practising Krishna consciousness and helping others receive the gift of the holy name.

Let us explore five steps that can help us become part of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's sankirtan movement.

Step 1: Recognise the Special Opportunity of Human Life

Human life gives us a special opportunity. Along with meeting our daily needs and duties, we can ask deeper questions about life: Who am I? Why am I here? What is the purpose of life? Is there something beyond temporary bodily needs and achievements?

The Vedic scriptures explain that eating, sleeping, fear and mating are activities common to both human beings and animals. However, human life offers something more: the opportunity to understand and practise dharma.

āhāra-nidrā-bhaya-maithunaṁ ca
sāmānyam etat paśubhir narāṇām |
dharmo hi teṣām adhiko viśeṣo
dharmeṇa hīnāḥ paśubhiḥ samānāḥ ||

"Eating, sleeping, defending and mating, these acts of humans are similar to animals. Of them (humans), dharma (religious conduct) is the only special thing, without dharma humans are also animals"

Hitopadesha 25 - Read the verse and its source

This verse does not mean that earning a living, caring for a family, working or meeting our responsibilities is wrong. These activities are necessary parts of life. Rather, the verse reminds us not to make them the only purpose of our existence.

Human intelligence allows us to look beyond our daily needs and ask about the soul, God and our eternal relationship with Him. Once we recognise this opportunity, we take the first step towards becoming part of Lord Chaitanya's movement.

Step 2: Understand the Higher Goal of Human Life

Lord Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead

The higher goal of human life is to re-establish our lost relationship with God.

Just as we have relationships in this world, each of us also has an eternal relationship with the Supreme Person, Krishna. Our material relationships are linked to the temporary body, but our relationship with Krishna is eternal.

We are Krishna's parts and parcels. He is the complete whole, and we are His eternal parts. The sun and its rays, the ocean and its drops, and a fire and its sparks help us understand this relationship.

However, under the influence of Maya, the Lord's external energy, the living entity forgets this eternal relationship and tries to find happiness independently of Krishna.

Srila Prabhupada explains the situation of conditioned life:

There are three kinds of miseries of life: adhyatmika, adibhautika, adi-daivika, Instead of understanding that we are being punished for sinful activities, under the spell of illusory energy we are thinking that this kicking, slapping and thrashing are accidental.

Srila Prabhupada had also said once:

Tiny living entities crawling on a little planet and are thinking "I am great"

These observations remind us how easily we can become absorbed in temporary achievements and forget who we really are.

Dealing with Maya

The influence of Maya, Krishna's illusory energy

How can we overcome the influence of Maya? Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu explains that Krishna is like the sun, while Maya is like darkness.

kṛṣṇa--sūrya-sama; māyā haya andhakāra
yāhāṅ kṛṣṇa, tāhāṅ nāhi māyāra adhikāra

Krishna is compared to sunshine, and Maya is compared to darkness. Wherever there is sunshine, there cannot be darkness. As soon as one takes to Krishna consciousness, the darkness of illusion (the influence of the external energy) will immediately vanish.

Chaitanya Charitamrita, Madhya 22.31 - Read on Vedabase

Therefore, by hearing about Krishna, chanting His names, remembering Him and serving Him, we gradually become free from the influence of illusion.

Dealing with Kali Yuga

Kali Yuga, the present age described in Vedic scriptures

The Vedic scriptures describe the present age as Kali Yuga, a time marked by quarrels, confusion and forgetfulness of spiritual life. At the same time, they prescribe a special way to make spiritual progress in this age: chanting the holy names of the Lord.

harer-nama harer-nama harer-namaiva kevalam
kalau nasty-eva nasty-eva nasty-eva gatir anyatha

Harinama, Harinama, Harinama is the only and foremost means to achieve emancipation. There is no other way, no other way, no other way in this age of Kali.

Chaitanya Charitamrita, Adi 17.21 - Read on Vedabase

Therefore, chanting Hari Nama is the recommended way to make spiritual progress in this age. By chanting sincerely and practising Krishna consciousness, we can advance spiritually even amidst the challenges of Kali Yuga.

Step 3: Follow the Principles of Krishna Consciousness

Understanding the goal of life is important. However, we must also shape our daily habits and actions to support our spiritual progress.

In the practice of Krishna consciousness, devotees follow four regulative principles. These principles help us control our senses, build self-discipline and create a good foundation for devotional service.

Principle 1: Compassion - No Meat-Eating

Compassion is an essential quality of a devotee. Anyone who wishes to develop love for God should also show kindness to all living beings.

Pure water means you do not add anything to it, but take out all the contamination. Similarly, pure love means you don’t put anything external; rather you take out all the dirt from your heart, and then you will experience pure love of God. , Compassion is an essential element of love.

Our food choices are one way to show compassion. The first regulative principle is to avoid eating meat, fish and eggs. Instead of causing suffering to other living beings to satisfy our taste, we learn to accept food offered to Krishna as prasadam.

Principle 2: Austerity - No Intoxication

Austerity means putting aside our selfish ambitions for a higher purpose.

H.H Radhanath Swami Maharaj

Austerity means choosing discipline for a higher goal. It is not limited to spiritual life. For example, a student who studies instead of playing, an athlete who follows a strict training routine and a devotee who chants despite distractions are all practising discipline in their own pursuits.

In Krishna consciousness, we build our ability to practise austerity by avoiding things that cloud our consciousness and weaken our determination. The second regulative principle is no intoxication. This includes avoiding alcohol, cigarettes and recreational drugs. One should also avoid tea, coffee and chocolates containing caffeine, as caffeine can act as a stimulant, affect the mind and lead to Intoxication.

Principle 3: Truthfulness - No Gambling

Truthfulness is an important quality in spiritual life. We should be honest in our dealings and avoid activities that encourage greed, cheating and the desire to gain without proper effort.

Gambling can strengthen these tendencies. It can also distract the mind from spiritual progress. Therefore, the third regulative principle is no gambling.

Principle 4: Cleanliness - No Illicit Sex

sex could be a gift of God but when it becomes an obsession, it plunders all intelligence and people are driven to abominable acts to satisfy their lust.

H.H Radhanath Swami Maharaj

Cleanliness in spiritual life includes both external and internal cleanliness. External cleanliness means keeping our body and surroundings clean. Internal cleanliness means freeing our consciousness from selfish desires and unwanted attachments.

Vedic culture sees marriage as a sacred commitment and provides a regulated way to lead family life. Krishna consciousness teaches us to respect this commitment and follow spiritual principles in our relationships.

The fourth regulative principle is no illicit sex. By following it, we learn to respect the sacred bond of marriage and avoid being controlled by unrestricted sense gratification.

If you want spiritual life, you have to pay the price. The price is the four regulative principles.

H.H. Bhakti Charu Swami Maharaj

These four principles are not meant to stop anyone from beginning spiritual life. Rather, they are practical commitments that help us build a disciplined life and make steady progress in devotional service. We should follow them with sincerity and seek the guidance of devotees along the way.

Step 4: Seek the Association of Lord Chaitanya's Devotees

Spiritual life becomes much easier when we receive the association and guidance of devotees. Reading can help us understand the teachings of Krishna consciousness. However, the association of devotees shows us how to apply these teachings in our daily lives.

Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu has repeatedly stressed the importance of sadhu-sanga, or association with devotees:

'sādhu-saṅga', 'sādhu-saṅga'—sarva-śāstre kaya
lava-mātra sādhu-saṅge sarva-siddhi haya

Simply by associating with a pure devotee, one becomes wonderfully advanced in Kṛṣṇa consciousness.

Chaitanya Charitamrita, Madhya 22.54 - Read on Vedabase

The association of devotees gives us encouragement, spiritual knowledge and practical guidance. Moreover, it helps us remain steady when we face difficulties in our devotional practice.

Devotees participating in Harinam Sankirtan

Before 13 July 1966, when ISKCON was officially incorporated, the opportunity to receive the association of devotees in many parts of the world was far more limited. By the mercy of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Lord Nityananda Prabhu, and through the extraordinary service and sacrifice of Srila Prabhupada, the Krishna consciousness movement has spread across the world.

Today, people in many countries can find devotee association, attend programmes, learn the teachings of the Bhagavad-gita and take part in Harinam Sankirtan. Therefore, we should make sincere use of this opportunity and seek the association of devotees who can guide us in spiritual life.

Step 5: Contribute to Lord Chaitanya's Sankirtan Movement

Imagine a great bridge being built to connect every town and village in the world. Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's Harinam Sankirtan movement is like that bridge. Through the chanting of His holy names, it connects people with Krishna.

The sankirtan movement will fulfil the desire of the Lord. Our participation does not decide whether His mission succeeds. However, by taking part in it, we get the opportunity to purify our hearts and advance in Krishna consciousness.

How can we contribute to Lord Chaitanya's Sankirtan Movement?

We can begin by sharing with others what we have received through the mercy of Krishna, the acharyas and the devotees. For example, we can chant the holy names, distribute spiritual books, organise or join Harinam Sankirtan, support devotional programmes, teach Krishna consciousness and encourage others to learn from the scriptures.

Not everyone needs to serve in the same way. Some may help through preaching, while others may organise programmes, cook and distribute prasadam, or offer financial and practical support. Every sincere service offered with devotion has value.

Above all, we should feel grateful to Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Sri Nityananda Prabhu, Srila Prabhupada and the great acharyas who have made this movement available to us. Their compassion and sacrifice have given us an opportunity that we should never take for granted.
